Understanding Global Holidays, Namedays & Religious Calendars

Everything you need to know about the three calendar traditions HolidaySync brings together

What Are Public Holidays?

Public holidays are officially recognized days on which employees are entitled to a day off from work, established by national or regional law. They are also called national holidays, bank holidays (in the UK and Ireland), statutory holidays, or federal holidays depending on the country.

Every country has a unique set of public holidays reflecting its history, culture, and religion. The United States observes 11 federal holidays including Independence Day and Thanksgiving, while Japan celebrates 16 public holidays — among the most in the world. Countries like India have a complex mix of national and regional holidays that vary by state.

HolidaySync pulls official public holiday data directly from government-recognized sources for 90+ countries through the Nager.at API, updated every year automatically.

What Is a Nameday?

A nameday (also written name day) is a tradition in many countries — especially in Europe — where each day of the calendar year is associated with one or more given names. When a day associated with your name arrives, you celebrate your "nameday," often with small gifts, cards, or gatherings, similar to a birthday.

Nameday traditions are especially strong in Poland, Greece, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Finland, Sweden, and other European countries. In Greece, namedays are often celebrated more enthusiastically than birthdays. In Poland, it's common to receive flowers and sweets from colleagues.

HolidaySync tracks namedays for 20+ European regions using real-time data, so you never miss an opportunity to celebrate someone's special day.

The Catholic Liturgical Calendar

The Catholic Church follows an annual cycle of liturgical seasons and feast days that shapes the prayer life and worship of over 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide. The year is divided into seasons: Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent, the Easter Triduum, the Easter Season, and Pentecost.

The most important dates — Easter, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Pentecost, and Corpus Christi — are "moveable feasts" whose dates shift each year based on the lunar calendar. Easter, for example, falls between March 22 and April 25 each year. HolidaySync calculates all moveable feasts using the standard Gregorian algorithm, meaning the dates are always accurate regardless of the year.

In addition to moveable feasts, the Church also observes 35+ fixed feast days including the Assumption of Mary (August 15), All Saints' Day (November 1), and the Immaculate Conception (December 8).

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about HolidaySync

What is a nameday and why should I track it?

A nameday is a tradition in many countries (especially in Europe) where each calendar day is associated with one or more given names. When a day comes around for your name, you celebrate your "nameday" — often with small gifts or gatherings, similar to a birthday. HolidaySync helps you remember these important cultural dates for friends and family across 20+ regions.

Which countries celebrate namedays?

Countries with strong nameday traditions include Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Slovakia, Spain, and the United States. The tradition varies in strength — in Greece and Poland, namedays are celebrated with great enthusiasm, while in other countries they're a smaller occasion.

When is Easter in ?

Easter is a moveable feast that falls between March 22 and April 25 each year. HolidaySync calculates the exact date automatically using the standard Gregorian algorithm. Enable the "Catholic Liturgical Calendar" option to see Easter and all related moveable feasts (Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Pentecost, etc.) on your calendar. The exact date for the current year is shown on the Catholic Calendar page.

What is a bank holiday?

A bank holiday is an official public holiday when banks and many businesses are legally required to close. The term is most commonly used in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Other countries use terms like "public holiday," "national holiday," or "statutory holiday" — but all refer to officially recognized days off. HolidaySync covers all of these under the umbrella of "public holidays."

Can I view holidays for multiple countries at once?

Yes. Use the "Advanced: select multiple countries" section below the calendar to check multiple countries simultaneously. HolidaySync overlays all their public holidays on a single calendar view, color-coded so you can tell them apart. This is ideal for global teams, international families, or anyone with connections across multiple countries.

What is the Catholic liturgical calendar?

The Catholic liturgical calendar is the annual cycle of seasons and feast days followed by the Catholic Church. It includes fixed feasts (like Christmas on December 25 and the Assumption on August 15) and moveable feasts whose dates shift each year (like Easter, Ash Wednesday, and Pentecost). HolidaySync computes all moveable feast dates mathematically, so they're always correct for the current year and beyond.

How accurate is the holiday data?

HolidaySync uses the Nager.at Public Holidays API, a well-maintained open-source dataset covering 90+ countries with contributions from government sources. Catholic feast dates are computed locally using the Gregorian Easter algorithm — no external API needed, so they're always accurate. Nameday data comes from nameday.abalin.net. We recommend verifying with official government sources for critical scheduling decisions.

Is HolidaySync free to use?

Yes, HolidaySync is completely free. No account, no sign-up, no subscription. Open the site, select your country, and your personalized calendar is ready instantly. Your preferences are saved in your browser for future visits.

Does the calendar update automatically for each new year?

Yes. HolidaySync always shows the current year's holidays by default, fetched live from the Nager.at API. Catholic feast dates are computed on the fly for any year. You can navigate to future months and years using the calendar arrows — the data updates automatically.

How do I use the date calculator?

Visit the Date Calculator page to calculate the number of days between any two dates, see how many days until an upcoming holiday, or find out what day of the week a specific date falls on. No manual calculation needed.
